Fyodor Karamazov is found dead one night. An epicurean and a compulsory liar, he was not a good father either. Therefore, his death raises the question of parricide. It could be any of his sons, as all seem to have their own reasons to get rid of him. It could be anybody else too. But who? The Brothers Karamazov is a superb murder mystery. This is, however, just one of its qualities and merely the opening of an impassable labyrinth. Not only does Dostoyevsky skilfully initiate in it profound philosophical and theological debates, exploring themes such as the existence of God, free will, and the nature of evil but he also deeply examines the conflict between human freedom and divine authority.
One of the best novels in history, The Brothers Karamazov is a rich and thought-provoking exploration of faith, doubt, and the human condition, leaving readers with profound questions about the essence of life and morality. Serialized in The Russian Messenger in 1879 and 1880, it was published in the book form a few months before Dostoyevsky s death in February 1881.
