The Glory of India: An anthology of Urdu Poetry in English translation, with its English and Hindi translations, brings out vividly how Urdu poetry has professed and practised down the ages the lofty ideals of nation building, patriotism, peaceful co-existence and catholocity of mind. It brings into sharper light the engagement of Urdu poets with the Freedom movement and national integration. It affords an opportunity to non-Urdu readers to gain or renew their acquaintance with the rich, indigenous tradition of Urdu literature.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section of the book titled ‘Glory of the Nation’ carries ten nuanced poems on India written by prominent Urdu poets including Durga Sahai Suroor Jehanabadi,
Zafar Ali Khan, Mohammad Iqbal, Anand Narayn Mulla and Ali Sardar Jafri. The second section titled ‘National and Religious Leaders’ carries sixteen poems on the leaders of our freedom struggle who also nurtured the values India today stands for. The third section, ‘The Indian Spectacle’ carries thirty-one poems explicating emotional, cultural, spiritual and physical contours of what constitutes India.
The poems present a plethora of tantalizing glimpses of India and they showcase the assimilative nature of Urdu poetry.
