Being a frequent visitor to Murree while growing up, I had that nostalgic love for Murree which made many of us long for our own ‘Little England’, even when there were other options on the map. The idea behind this book was to document stories from Murree of yesteryear and make people relive those bygone days. The book tries to tell stories of churches, schools, clubs, villas and colonial era hotels with the help of user friendly maps as well as geocodes to help a reader navigate Murree through back streets and side roads. How many of us have heard or seen Brightlands hotel, Hackthorn house, Nutwood house, Kinturk house or the birthplace of Francis Younghusband, the great British explorer? Do you know why Murree lost to Simla in becoming the summer capital of Punjab? Remember the infamous General Dyer of Jallianwala Bagh or Major Hudson of Hudson Horse who arrested Bahadur Shah Zafar in 1857; they all are connected to Murree. Our own Benazir Bhutto lived here and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was imprisoned here. And I am not even talking about Lawrence College, Convent of Jesus and Mary, Presentation Convent, St Denys, Murree Brewery or Holy Trinity Church for which Murree is most known for. So come, let us explore, relive and celebrate Murree together.
