Dr Farakh Ahmed Khan (FRCS) is professionally known as one of the finest urologist-surgeons in Pakistan. His colleagues acknowledge his pioneering administrative contribution to urology departments of Mayo Hospital and Post-Graduate Medical Institute, Lahore. He was appointed Professor of Urology from 1981 in the latter institution. His book on Murree emanates from his passion for mountaineering he climbed the Alps in Europe in addition to Pakistani mountains and gives us the first comprehensive glimpse into the history of this hill station. From geographic links that bind Murree hilltops to the mountains of the Pir Panjal Range, to the fascinating story of how Murree got its name, the book encompasses everything that a historian or a tourist would be interested in knowing. Prof. Khan has ploughed through British sources to give to Murree the substance it has lacked as a hill station. In a way, the title Murree: A British Town in the Hills presents to the reader the history of the British Raj, the evolution of British nationalism and the ideas that were tried out in India by its various viceroys and administrators. The book is profusely illustrated and will attract readers in Pakistan and the region of South Asia. Just like his book Waiting for Orders (2000) examined medicine in Pakistan in the light of social anthropology of the profession, his book on Murree abounds with rare insights into the behavior of the men entwined with the history of this most beautiful of hill stations in the subcontinent. Books on Simla have been published in India. Pakistan was waiting for its first substantial book on Murree. It has got it now.
