The Fall of the Kingdom of the Punjab
By Khushwant Singh

Fact is stranger than fiction” this proverb is perfectly applicable to The Fall of the Kingdom of Punjab. The book presents a gripping and compelling narrative of the decline of the Punjab Kingdom following the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the mighty Sikh Empire in India, built this powerful kingdom through sheer courage, bravery, and strength. However, after his death, the vast empire he had so carefully created began to crumble. What followed was a ruthless game of betrayal, manipulation, and internal conspiracies. Pointless and destructive wars were fought, eventually weakening the empire to the point where it could no longer sustain itself. All of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s sons passed away one after another, leaving only his youngest son, Duleep Singh, who ascended the throne at the tender age of five. His mother, Rani Jind Kaur, attempted to govern on his behalf for some time, but the British ultimately took control of the kingdom after the First Anglo-Sikh War. Rani Jind Kaur was imprisoned, and Duleep Singh was forcibly taken away from his homeland and deported to Britain. During this period, the British also seized the priceless Kohinoor Diamond and confiscated it.The Fall of the Kingdom of Punjab offers a fascinating and vivid account of the chaotic and tragic phase the Punjab Kingdom endured before its final capture by the British. It is a powerful portrayal of a once-glorious empire brought down by internal conflict and external domination.
