Alamgir Hashmi has been writing poetry for many decades. He has published twelve books of poetry and numerous volumes of literary criticism, as well as original anthologies and translations. His writings have also appeared widely in journals and works of reference.
Hashmi has worked as a professor, writer, editor, and broadcaster. He has served as a judge or jury member for many national and international awards, including the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
