Before beginning Primitives by Kathy (PBK), Kathy Phillips worked with her mother as a manager of a combination gift shop and art studio. The years spent as a buyer in the gift industry provided the experience she needed as she ventured into the wholesale arena with handmade candle boxes (at that point, her only product). In mid-1997, Kathy took a booth at a trade show and by the end of the show, she had more than $85,000 in orders for the wooden candle box. Orders in hand, she went to the bank for a loan to help get her started and on her way to shipping all the orders. A newly divorced mother of two, her personal savings served as a guarantee for that first loan. The rest, as they say, is history. Primitives by Kathy is considered the leader in modern-day primitives.
