Zulfikar Hirji is currently associate Professor at York University, Toronto. He was educated at McGill, Cambridge and Oxford universities and has been a research associate at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford. He has conducted research in the Middle East, East Africa, South Asia, Europe and North America, focusing on the sensory aspects of Muslim societies and cultures, and Muslim expressions of space, movement and relatedness, both past and present. His publications include co-authorship (with Farhad Daftary) of The Ismailis: An Illustrated History (2008) and (with Ruba Kana'an) Places of Worship and Devotion in Muslim Societies (forthcoming).
